The Verdict Is In: It WORKS!
Teletherapy refers to providing mental health therapy either over the phone or through video chat.
While very different from seeing your therapist face-to-face in the same room and engaging with in-person interaction, the research is clear!
Teletherapy is similarly effective to in-person sessions.
But is it right for ME?
That’s a valid question.
As with in-person therapy, teletherapy has its pros and cons.
The method you choose ultimately depends on your specific needs and situation. When we discuss what’s best for you, we’ll explore several important considerations.
Therapy How, When, and Where You Want It
Many people report loving the convenience. Teletherapy allows you to save valuable time spent commuting through stressful traffic and avoid losing even more time in a waiting room.
All you do is log on, and you see your therapist at the scheduled time – with minimal wait.
It also allows you to see the therapist of your choice – when distance might have otherwise prevented it. As long as your therapist has a license in your location, distance is no longer a deal-breaker.
Just Between You Two
Teletherapy may provide more privacy because you don’t have to worry about running into someone you know on your way to your therapist’s office. Teletherapy allows you to open up and relax fully in the comfort of your own home – or even your favorite outdoor setting.
The potential downside is that you need to find a private location – where others can’t hear or disturb you.
Consider whether you can find a space to be alone – and, perhaps, investing in an economical set of earphones or headphones.
A Digital – as well as Emotional – Connection
Some people are Internet savvy and have a good Wi-Fi connection, so they’re likely excellent candidates for teletherapy.
If you have a hard time navigating electronic devices – or your Internet connection is unpredictable – teletherapy might not be for you.
Safety, Silver (Coverage), and Security
Teletherapy has been the primary mode of providing care for most therapists during the global COVID-19 pandemic – it eliminates the risk of spreading disease between the therapist and the client, keeping everyone safe.
If you’re using insurance, you will want to ensure that your insurance provider covers telehealth services.
And you’ll want to ask about privacy. With teletherapy, you may need to transmit your personal information online. Typically, your therapist will use a secure platform designed to protect your information, but with anything sent electronically, there are risks.
Carefully consider these factors when deciding whether teletherapy is right for you.
